Monstrous Regiment

New Magazine: Lauren Nickodemus introduces Monstrous Regiment

Monstrous Regiment Magazine is the newest project from Monstrous Regiment, an indie publishing house focusing on themes of feminism, gender, and sexuality. It features fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and visual arts by Scotland-based creatives.

The magazine promotes a feminist ethos but differentiates itself from other feminist or female-aimed publications by intentionally breaking out of stereotypical feminine aesthetics and restrictive themes. It seeks to present an alternative, grittier aesthetic for women, trans, genderfluid and non-binary people who do not identify with narrow societal visions of femininity. Each issue of the magazine is themed around a certain colour, and all submissions are inspired in some way by its connotations and what it might evoke or represent.

The magazine is meant to be a rallying point for feminist artists of all genders to share their work, tackle a range of diverse themes, and contribute to the growth of the Scottish indie literary scene.
